A Crab Feast @ Mellben Seafood

Last Saturday, we celebrated Jefrey’s first birthday in Singapore at Mellben Seafood in Ang Mo Kio. He said he wanted salted egg crabs, so I suggested the place because it is quite popular. But the truth is, I had never been to the restaurant itself before and wanted to try it out myself. I have once tried some takeout from the place, though, and really loved it, so I knew it was a good choice.

Is it just me, or does that crab on the right look like it’s doing the “Paint me like I’m one of your French girls” pose?

Sorry. I digress.

The restaurant isn’t actually a fancy place, but more like a hawker set up, as you can see below. But it’s fine because that makes the food cheaper than normal restaurants. And you can tell it’s really good because there was a long queue when we arrived at close to 9pm. We didn’t actually realise there was a queue at first, and just waltzed right in and grabbed a table. Oh we had quite a scolding for being ignoramuses, I tell you.

We were asked to order while we were in the queue, and after all that was written down, it was handed back to us so we could hand it to the girl manning the queue when it was our turn. After around 10 to maybe 20 minutes, we were finally led to a table. We were asked to order our drinks, and those were brought first and it took quite some time before the food started arriving, because they cook them on the spot. So here’s a tip if you’re going – don’t show up famished. The wait was worth it, though, because everything was soooo delicious that we couldn’t stop gushing about them!

Here’s what we ordered:

BAMBOO CLAMS
Okay this one was quite disappointing, the only one in the bunch, though. It had so much garlic that it totally overpowered the taste of the clams. I love garlic, with aglio olio being my favorite kind of pasta, but even I thought they overdid it. If you have vampire friends, they will definitely die with just one bite of this thing.

SALTED EGG PORK RIBS
This was ridiculously delicious. It’s pork ribs covered in salted egg yolk batter and is one of my favourite dishes in Singapore. We licked them clean to the bones and Jeff even asked if we wanted to add one more when we were done. I told him more dishes were coming and decide later. (And now I’m craving for it. Ugh. #bloggerproblems)

SALTED EGG CRABS
This is a big crab covered in the same salted egg yolk stuff as above and is so good that some of us couldn’t help but lick the crab shells. It is THAT good. And the crab itself is a good quality one, too. Normally people just get good bite sized pieces of meat from the legs, but this one has a lot of meat inside the head too, I don’t know if it’s brain or fat or what, just that it’s crab. And yes, I know what you’re thinking. #deathbycholesterol  (And yes I know hashtags don’t work in blogs.)
CRAB BEE HOON
This is probably the most popular dish in Mellben, and for good reason. The soup is soooo yummy and full of flavour that everyone in our group couldn’t help but comment on it individually. I was quite happy eating just the soup and vermicelli without the crab, though that was a good quality one too. Topping up S$5 for more soup was definitely a great idea.

We also had some vegetables, rice, and fried buns. I realized later that we didn’t need the buns after all because we hadn’t ordered chili crab, as 3 crabs would have been too much already. We all groaned from fullness after polishing off our meal, but the eating wasn’t over. Cate asked one of the waitresses to bring over the chocolate cake that we had asked them to set aside for us earlier. Yes, they are so accommodating, and the waitress even kindly took our group photo for us, taking several shots and staying behind to ask us if we were happy with her takes. We were.

We decided to take a long walk to our bus stop after dinner, so what we could burn off some of the indulgent food we had just eaten. While walking, we still couldn’t stop raving about the food. Cate and Tatsie said they were definitely taking their family for dinner there when they come over for a vacation. So yes, in case I haven’t drummed the point in yet… it is THAT good. So go. NOW. And feel free to invite me because I would love an excuse to go back.
