My Singapore-based friend Jeff had decided to fly home to our hometown for the holidays and asked if we could meet up with a couple of college friends for lunch before he flew back. Maya was busy at their family business so we decided to go to a restaurant near her so it would be easier for her to nip out. Hence Palmeras.
Jeff and I arrived earlier, so we ordered for everyone and got the seafood bilao (P320), ginataang gulay (P150), and Shanghai fried rice (P130).
The most important thing we ordered was the restaurant’s most famous specialty, the knickerbocker glory, which for some reason was not on the menu. This dessert is made up of a mixture of fruits topped with a scoop of ice cream.
My friends think it’s an original creation but it’s actually not. I even read about it on Harry Potter, Dudley ate one in the zoo and threw a tantrum because it did not have enough ice cream on top. So his father ordered another one and gave the first to Harry. Potterhead much?
Anyway, I liked their “reverse Christmas tree” decoration on their ceiling.
I love the laidback feel of the restaurant. It is one of the oldest restaurants in our hometown and it’s one of the few which has kept up the quality of its food and appearance.
I’ve been disappointed by Alavar’s Seafood, Myrna’s Bakehouse, and Manang Terry’s Chicken Inato during this vacation and it’s good to know that my childhood does not have to be ruined by everyone.
It was fun chatting with Jeff, Maya, and Kathy. Maya was so nice, bringing some Abe’s lechon and chicharong bulaklak for Jeff and Kathy to try. The place is owned by her family and is just a 5 minute walk away.
She gave me some to try when we met last time. The lechon is delicious, and is quite famous.
I’m glad we had a chance to meet up.
