Brother Orange

Have you heard about Brother Orange?

Maybe this is old news to you, but I only heard about him recently. Last week, my team mate Guohao and I were having a very late dinner at Pizza Hut when he told me about this really funny thing he read on the internet.

It all started when this guy named Matt had his iphone stolen in New York. About a year later, he noticed photos of a Chinese guy posing in front of an orange tree were showing up in his phone. He thought it was weird, so he posted it on buzzfeed, saying, who is this man and why are his photos showing up on my phone?

Within hours, his article was translated in China and shared all over Weibo, the Chinese twitter. It became the number one topic there, and he became famous and everyone wanted to help him find “Brother Orange,” which was what they named the mystery guy.

Hours later, they actually found him!

So Matt joined Weibo where he quickly got a hundred thousand followers. This was what he used to talk to Brother Orange, and they became friends, even though neither one spoke each other’s language fluently.

After a while, Brother Orange invited Matt to visit him in China, so he booked plane tickets, not knowing what was in store for him there.

Once he landed, he was in for the surprise of his life.

He became an instant celebrity, OMG!

I think this is probably the funniest story I have heard about how someone became famous!

You can read the rest of the detailed lengthy story that Matt himself wrote on Buzzfeed. What an unusual bromance indeed.

One last thing, though. Just when I thought that was it, this week I found out that it was Brother Orange’s turn to visit Matt in the USA! Then yesterday, I discovered this on Matt’s twitter:

Can’t wait to watch what they do on Ellen. 😀

UPDATE:

Here’s a video of their episode on Ellen.

Apparently they met Britney Spears too, and she even replied to them on Twitter!
