My friends Arlyn and Armar invited me to go hunting for red velvet churros at the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar. So we went tonight.
We met up at Paya Lebar MRT station and walked about two blocks to the place. There were festive lights on the road, and I tried taking shots of them while crossing the road.
“I hope I don’t die while taking photos,” I joked. “Can you imagine the headlines? Filipino foreign talent dragged by bus while taking photos in the middle of the road.”
Morbid joke, I know. #knockonwood
We finally arrived at the stalls and immediately went to work finding the churros. We found one that sold red velvet churros but not the pandan ones. They didn’t look like the ones we were looking for, though, but despite not looking Instagramable, they tasted delicious. Get them from the Cake Love stall.
We found a stall called Yang Original that sold coconut shakes, my favourite drink in all the world. Each glass had a scoop of coconut ice cream in it. It was so refreshing, especially in the sweltering heat!
We suspected that the heat was caused by the shawarma stalls. Speaking of which, a Spanish shawarma vendor kept saying “Olala! Mamma Mia!” at me whenever we passed by, which was definitely not the way to get me to buy his goods.
We kept on walking up and down the stalls, hoping to find the churros we were looking for, as well as Thai ice cream rolls, popsicle sticks, and deep fried oreos. We came across all sorts of food, including these things which looked like barbecued kids’ hands, according to Armar.
Then we finally found the oreos at JW Food Express.
It was surprisingly delicious – fluffy and not as oily as I was afraid it would be.
Beside the oreos stall was a churros stall that was closed. We suspected that this was the famous churros we were looking for but that they had sold out due to their products’ popularity.
After that, we decided to all it a night. Arlyn and Armar went on to their bus stop, and on my way back to the MRT station, I bought coconut ice cream which was served with strips of fresh coconut in a coconut shell. Yum!
Then my flatmate asked me to buy a Ramly burger for her, so I decided to buy one for myself too, because I’ve never tried one, and I was curious why that always has a long queue!
It tastes good, but not the kind of good that will make me crave for it, honestly.
I guess the bazaar is open until Ramadan ends this week, so go get some of these grub while you can!

Hi, Dee! I love the photo of the lights. Beautiful!
I’m glad I had already eaten before I saw the food shots. Otherwise, I would have been hungry for sure. (I still might be craving a fried Oreo. That sounds intriguing.) 🙂

Ramly burgers tasted much better in the past, maybe because now they do so much of mass cooking at one go. Then again, during festive seasons like this, you just have to get at least one burger to strike off the bazaar list. :9

Oh, what have I missed out all these years! I see myself going back at Geylang Serai’s Ramadan Bazaar soon as I haven’t bought all that I wanted yet despite being there for 2 hours!
