If you’re living in Singapore and looking for a short but sweet getaway, why not go to Malaysia? It’s so near, and there is much to see and do. I have been to three different spots in Malaysia which I can recommend.
Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is the most popular Malaysian destination because of the gorgeous Petronas twin towers. Their pictures really don’t do them justice. They are more magical in person.
You can also climb the towers if you queue up early.
Aside from the towers, Kuala Lumpur also has the Batu Caves. I’ll be honest – I didn’t actually get to see the inside of the caves because we got too lazy to climb the stairs, but the beautiful golden statue at its base was enough for us.
Besides, you can take a picture of the stalactites in your background.
Or you could take a photo of all the birds on the wires. It makes for a beautiful pic.
I had a memorable time there with my gal pals years ago. I realize that we should not have taken the bus there because not only does the ride itself take more time, but so does the immigration point. One of our party actually got stuck for so long in a queue that our bus driver threatened to leave him behind!
In retrospect, it would have been a lot more convenient if we had just flown there instead. So if you’re planning a trip there, here is a list of Flights from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. You’re welcome.
We stayed at Radius International Hotel, which was a decent, affordable place to stay.
We also spent some time shopping and eating at KLCC Mall, where we bought Vincci shoes and ate Nando’s Peri Peri Chicken and Baskin & Robbins ice cream.
Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru is so near Singapore that going there is just like going for a drive to a neighbouring town. Most people head over there to go shopping because their food and goods are half the price compared to Singapore. I definitely enjoyed shoe-shopping and getting my fill of seafood and massages while I was there. If you’re a fan of durian (which I’m not), you can also drop by a fruit stand where they sell those and all sorts of fruits.
However, did you know that Johor Bahru is more than just a cheap shopping destination? You could rent a van to bring you around to Sultan Abubakar’s Mosque, Grand Palace, Clock tower, and the Zon mall.
If you’re more adventurous, you can always go to Legoland.
We didn’t need to book a hotel because it was a day trip.
Langkawi
If you itch to hit the beach, then you’re in luck. You can book Airline Tickets to bring you to Langkawi, one of the most gorgeous strip of beaches I have ever set foot on.
I mean, just look at how postcard-perfect that looks!
It is so pretty that my friend Mary Gay was inspired to ask me to snap her prenup photos there. Can you blame her?
Aside from the beach, you can also book a tour to take you island hopping.
On our way to the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park, we had a view of the pregnant maiden lake. It is called thus because the mountains apparently look like a pregnant maiden on repose. Do you see it?
We enjoyed swimming in the cool waters of the geopark enclosed swimming area.
We also got to feed the eagles before landing on an island where we had a picnic.
We stayed in The Cottage Langkawi, which was a 10-minute walk away from the beach and had really good rooms with a homey feel.
So if you have just a few days of vacation leave and can’t afford to go very far, don’t worry. Malaysia is the solution you’re looking for.
