A couple of days ago, we were scrounging for lunch at Changi City Point when we noticed that there was a short queue at The Original Boat Noodle. So we decided to try it.
I have never tried boat noodles before so I was intrigued. Boat noodles are called such because originally in Thailand, they were sold in boats.
According to Wikipedia:
In the past, a merchant who sold boat noodles would have been the only person working on a small boat, and would have had to do everything by himself from paddle a boat, scald the noodles, season the soup, serve the dish, handle money and wash the dishes. If the bowl was too big, it would be difficult to hand over to the customer on the land and might be easily spilled. This is the reason why the boat noodle’s bowl is small, for the convenience and safety of the merchant.
That tradition has been preserved in this restaurant, so each bowl is very small and costs only $1.3 apiece.
Do not make the mistake of ordering just one – it will definitely not be enough! The restaurant recommends ordering 4 bowls for a filling meal.
The good thing about the small bowls though is that you can order different flavours in one sitting and get to decide which one you like best. My suggestion is to order 2 small bowls first, decide which flavour you like more, then order 2 more bowls of that.
This is their menu:
I like how they laid out all the food in one picture and labelling them so that you know which one is which.
They have two kinds of soup.
Pathumthani has a dark soy sauce broth and tastes salty, sourish and spicy. I love this one.
Ayutthaya is a creamy broth with a strong coconut milk taste that is way too sweet for our liking. It kinda tasted more like a dessert than a savoury dish.
Both soups don’t taste very “Thai” on their own until you use the four condiments on the table – fish sauce, sugar, spiced vinegar, and chilli flakes. Classic Thai dishes usually taste sweet, sour, salty and spicy all at once. Just don’t go overboard with the chilli if you can’t take it like me. 😅
We also tried three other dishes.
Bangkok Omelette Rice is all right but not worth the $8.9 price tag.
The grilled beef meatballs are pretty good, like your typical street food.
The frame grilled ayam legend (which I forgot to photograph) is tender and tasty and something I recommend.
I washed it all down with my fave drink to order from any Thai food resto – Thai iced tea.
I love their tumbler, by the way. It’s thick and of good quality and something that I reuse. 😄
