My friend Maya was in town for a few days last week. She used to live in Singapore and therefore didn’t need to do any touristy stuff, but just wanted to catch up with old friends and re-eat her old faves from back when she was still based here.
Our first stop was Mookata. This isn’t an old fave hers, but rather, something new for all of us.
Mookata is a popular Thai barbecue restaurant on East Coast Road, which is near our flat. We ordered a set for 2 which was just enough for us 3 ladies. We had a bit of difficulty cooking the meat on the steep mountain-shaped grill because they kept on sliding downwards into the soup.
The meat didn’t look like they were marinated but once we tasted them, we were surprised at how tasty they were, even without any dipping sauce.
I would recommend this for the taste but only if you don’t mind the effort in cooking your own food and the barbecue smell which will get stuck in your hair afterwards.
Back home, we had some Awfully Chocolate stacked cake and ice cream for dessert as well as a bottle of Moscato D’Asti wine while watching The Incredibles on Netflix.
The next day we had lunch in Marche in Somerset so that Maya could have her favourite sautéed mushrooms.
We then walked around Somerset and Orchard Central to do some shopping. It is Great Singapore Sale after all!
Notable buys – Lovisa earrings, Zara bucket bag, Anessa sunscreen skincare milk. I was surprised to find the last one in Don Don Donki for only around 30 bucks, because I’m pretty sure I saw that selling for way more in Watsons.
Then we walked towards Plaza Singapura and ended up shopping for toys – not for ourselves, but our nephews and nieces. We are literally titas y’all.
We were somehow still full from dinner so we just had Yole frozen yogurt. It was my first time to try Yole since they changed names from Llaollao. Though they look different, I really can’t detect a difference in taste. Maybe I should check with the newly opened Llaollao stall at the airport.
During weekdays, Maya met up with other friends, but we had breakfast or dinner with her when we were free. I brought her to East Coast Park for breakfast one day and got Deliveroo to bring some of her Indonesian food cravings one night.
It’s always nice to catch up with old friends so I’m glad Maya dropped by!

Isn’t it so funny the tastes that you miss when you leave a city? This sounds like such fun!
