After touring Kyoto for 2 days, Flisha and I headed to Osaka, which is 30 minutes away via the JR line. We checked into an AirBnb though we could also just have stayed in our Kyoto hotel, which is what most people do. Since we had only one day, we only managed to see two attractions: Osaka Castle and Dotonbori.
Osaka Castle
We decided to take a river cruise around Osaka Castle but I honestly wasn’t that impressed by it because we didn’t go during the sakura season. I can imagine that it would be gorgeous if all the trees we passed were laden with cherry blossoms, though.
After the cruise, we walked towards the Osaka Castle grounds.
We bought a ticket to go inside. There were lots of museum displays, which is good for history buffs.
The view from up high was great, but again, would have been more stunning in sakura season.
The highlight for me was getting to wear a Japanese kimono and getting photos taken with it.
Dotonbori
Dotonbori is stunning at night, so I decided to go there by myself when Flisha could not because she was exhausted. I’m glad I went even though I ended up paying a lot of money for the cab on my way back home because my feet were killing me.
Food
Osaka is best known for its food, and it has the best food in the many places I visited in Japan. For example, I tried the okonomiyaki in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, and Osaka’s version wins, hands down.
They also have really really good beef! We tried one at a restaurant in the underground eat street.
But even the ones not in restaurants are really delicious, too, like the street kobe beef steak that I had in Dotonbori.
One more dish I recommend is the famous Rikuro cheesecake which is also in Dotonbori. It’s super jiggly and soft and delicious! No wonder it’s so popular.
The next day, we headed back to Tokyo. We decided to send our luggage there, through a service offered by our hotel in Kyoto. This is a very convenient service that you should take advantage of if you’re travelling all over Japan. Read all about the rest of my Japan tours below.
