I went to Europe last Friday night.
That’s what it felt like, anyway.
It started at an event that I signed up for on Internations. I very nearly didn’t go because for some reason I was feeling tired after work, but decided to power through.
The event was at Zinc, a bar in Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong’s popular hangout spot in Central. I paid H$100 for my entry fee which included a drink (I chose a white wine) and bar snacks – fries, pizza, and chicken wings.
I stuck a name tag on my top and chatted with other expats like me. I ended up chatting with Joanna and Vikas, and we hit it off so much, we decided to go somewhere else after.
Joanna had been in Hong Kong the longest, so we said she should decide where to bring us. “I’ll take you to Europe,” she said. And we walked up some stairs and streets and into Club Feather Boa on Staunton Street.
The place was like a French boudoir. It was like we had accidentally stepped back in time and walked into a French whore’s bedroom.
“Do you like strawberries?” Joanna asked.
“Yes!” I said.
So she ordered their bestseller – the chocolate-rimmed frozen strawberry daiquiri – for the three of us.
I took a sip and oh my God it was to die for! This is my new favourite cocktail! It’s more like a smoothie than a cocktail, but I’ve always had a sweet tooth!
As we sipped our cocktails while standing in front of a gigantic mirror, a couple of men started chatting to us. They were Irish, they said. One had to leave but the other stayed with us, and later on he decided to buy everyone another round of chocolate-rimmed frozen strawberry daiquiris.
Just then, I noticed someone familiar. Could it be – ?
I walked over and tapped him on the shoulder. It was my ex colleague from Singapore! He said it was his last night in Hong Kong, actually, and he was moving back to Singapore the next day.
Of all the clubs, in all the towns, in all the world, he walks into mine.
What are the odds?
That was certainly one interesting night!
