The fun thing about Chinese New Year in Hong Kong is that you get 3 public holidays. In Singapore there’s only 2, while Philippines has only one.
So yesterday, I met up with my friends May, Beulah and King to celebrate CNY at Frites in Tai Kok Tsui. I know, it’s not Chinese food, but we’re not Chinese, so maybe it’s okay?
Beulah had some discount coupons, so we ordered a bunch of stuff for sharing.
I really loved the mussels and the pancakes.
It was also happy hour, so we ordered some cocktails – or at least most of us did, anyway; someone is a water girl! We were amused at how it seemed so Sex and the City – four women with a boozy brunch.
After we finished eating, we continued nattering on for maybe a couple of hours. The restaurant wasn’t busy, and we asked the waitress if we could stay on. She happily said sure.
Beulah had to unfortunately head back home to work, but the rest of us went on to West Kowloon Park to grab hot coffees (because it was cold!) and continue chatting while checking out the view.
Its smattering of campers and view of the sea somehow reminded me of Singapore’s East Coast Park, where I used to hang out before, and made me miss my friends from another life.
But life goes on, and dwelling on the past will only hurt. I’m just glad I have made new friends here.
The last one is not a pastry, by the way, but an actual bamboo cup holding sugar cane soft serve ice cream, which tasted as what you’d expect.
About the other pastries – usually when you eat a pastry which looks as pretty as that, it is made of tacky tasting fondant. These actually tasted good. However, at their price point we felt that they were not worth it, and are worth a one time try just because they are quite photogenic and Instagrammable, but we’re not gonna eat them again. Which is why I didn’t buy any of the New York collection pastries when I was there again.
