“Can you imagine life without our pets?” My friend Chi asked in our WhatsApp group chat a few days ago. This was after we had spent a lot of time gushing and giggling over videos of our pets – each other’s “godpets.”
I read somewhere that Millennials treat their pets as their firstborn child, and I guess that’s the case for us four childless besties in our late thirties.
Coffee was the first. Chi got this toy poodle as a birthday present from her husband back in 2017. She was surprised that she felt so much love for him, like he was her baby.
We joked about her being a dog’s mom, but then she turned the joke on us when she said: “You are Coffee’s godmothers, okay?”
The next 2 were brought home on the same day – the 28th of August 2021. But it was in 2 different homes in 2 different countries.
I brought Froyo home in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile in London, Ngangi and her husband brought home a cavapoo and named him Milo.
The final “cousin” came recently, when Gelle and her husband finally brought home a cavapoo on the 13th of February of this year. They named him Coco.
“I’m so happy to have another goddog!” I told Gelle when she shared the news. “Froyo is still an unico gato.”
Unico hijo is Filipino/Spanish for “only son” which I swapped with gato which is Spanish for cat.
Now I know that cats are not for everyone, people usually prefer dogs. My friends were at first hesitant for their pets to have a “catsin” but thanks to Froyo, by their own admittance, they are now starting to love cats, too.
So to answer Chi’s question at the beginning of this post: I don’t want to imagine. They definitely made our lives more colorful.
P.S. Here are more recent pictures of my goddogs.
Chi also has another dog named Renzo, by the way. He is also a good boy!
