A Memorable Birthday @ The Dome, Edinburgh {Deetour}

If you’re following me on Instagram, you must know that I was in UK this month. I really enjoyed myself over there and I am overwhelmed with how to even begin blogging about all of it! Normally I would go chronologically, but this time let’s try something new and not do that, just because.

Let’s start with the most memorable – my birthday.

My birthday began in Jersey Channel Islands, home of my college bestie Zenie and her husband John. We woke up early and headed to the airport to board a plane to Exeter, then Edinburgh. This was my first ever time to travel on my birthday.

After landing, we checked in to the lovely old-fashioned Murrayfield Hotel where I discovered something horrifying – my passport was missing. 😱😱😱

I did say this was memorable, right?

"Hello, Edinburgh airport, my passport is missing!"
“Hello, Edinburgh airport, my passport is missing!”

After a few calls and emails and tweets to the airline and airport, I took a breath and said, “There’s nothing more we can do, it’s lost! No use wasting our day over it, let’s proceed with our tour.”

And so we did. 😄

Zenie would later admit that John said he was amazed at how calm I was about the whole I-might-soon-be-stateless situation. The truth was, I was like a duck – I appeared calm on the surface but I was paddling like hell underneath.

Walking around Edinburgh made it easier to semi-forget my problem, though, because it is so so gorgeous! It’s the most breathtaking place that I saw in UK.

I now understand why each time I mentioned to someone that I was going there, their eyes would light up and they would always say the same thing – “Edinburgh is beautiful!!!”

There is brilliant architecture everywhere you look, and it’s kind of like being in a movie that is set in the past, full of castles and old buildings with pillars or turrets, except that this one had shopping malls, too.

Best of both worlds, I say!

I’ll reserve the rest of my Edinburgh photos for another post, because what I really wanted to focus on is The Dome, where we had my birthday dinner. It was located in New Town.

It looks really beautiful from outside, doesn’t it?

Drop dead dazzling!

Just like everything else in Edinburgh.

The place was recommended by my friend Melvin, who had also celebrated a birthday there once. I had booked a reservation through their website, so we were ushered to our table in the Grill Room.

After perusing the menu, here’s what we ordered:

Filo-wrapped Hornig’s Haggis with whisky sauce

Crispy goats cheese, black pudding, celeriac remoulade

I chose haggis for my starter because it’s a famous Scottish dish that I obviously had to taste. This one was really good!

I was also happy to finally try the famous British black pudding that I had read so much about. It was not what I expected. I thought it would have the consistency of chocolate pudding, but it turns out it’s more like bread pudding.

Angus Venison Fillet, butternut squash, grilled shallots, blackberry and honey jus

Buccleuch Ribeye Steak, french fries, Sauce Diane, vine tomatoes
the-dome-edinburgh-12
Grilled Argyll Salmon, pickled red cabbage, broccoli

I chose the salmon because someone had told me Edinburgh has good seafood. I made a great choice because it was really sumptuous fresh-tasting salmon. 😋

The venison and steak were delicious, too!

It was a really great spot to celebrate my birthday.
