No Menu {Food Review}

Our EVP Sandra was in town last week and brought our team and her former team to No Menu, a lovely Italian restaurant. My flatmates had been brought there before, so I was pretty excited to try it.

When we got there, there was a funny mix-up at the reservations counter before we were ushered into a private room.

It’s so pretty, like you’re in someone’s fancy home. The restaurant is apparently family-owned, which probably explains the family home-like atmosphere.

Appetizers

Our server suggested some appetizers to start – parma ham and burrata, the latter of which is what they are famous for. Some have even claimed it to be the best burrata in Singapore. It was really delicious, I have to say.

Also, my New York-based boss was amazed at how fresh and delicious the tomatoes were. She said one was hard-pressed to find a flavourful tomato in the US.

The restaurant is named No Menu because in the past, they did not have one, and only served whatever specials they wanted to serve you for the day. They do have a menu nowadays, though, and here is a peek at one page of it.

Pasta

The server also rattled off their specials for the day, things that are not in the menu, in true No Menu style. I decided to go with one of those.

Homemade tagliatelle with spicy suckling pig

I loved the fresh pasta and the sauce which was just slightly spicy and not too much for the spiciness to overwhelm the taste.

I also had a chance to try two other different pasta dishes thanks to my teammates Guohao and Yan Ming, who decided, in true Singaporean style, to share food.

Lobster pasta

I can’t remember the exact name of this dish, but it was lobster pasta with tomato sauce. The lobster was really good. Guohao even commented that it tasted better than the ones in Halifax – a place famous for lobsters. Of course, he might have been exaggerating. Please don’t kill him, any Canadians who might be reading this!

Spinach and Ricotta Tortelloni with Butter, Sage, and Parmigiano

Yanming ordered this but so did Carly. She was quite excited for it because she loves butter and sage. It’s also really delicious and I was actually tempted to order it but I like having meat in my dishes.

We were served quite a hefty size, so I was feeling very full after finishing off my plate, but of course I still had room for dessert because there’s a separate compartment for that in the stomach, didn’t you know?

Dessert

Their not-on-the-menu dessert special for the day was the creme brûlée and everyone wanted to order it but unfortunately they only had 4 of it left, so some of us had to try other things – something that I did not regret. We decided to order different things and share them.

Creme Brûlée

This was very delicious, one of the best creme brûlées we had ever tasted, and the best dessert we tasted that day, I have to say.

Chocolate Truffle

We were surprised that this turned out to be an ice cream. It was delicious, too.

Oops, I can’t remember what this one was called. Hazelnut something? Whatever it was, it was also good.

Panna Cotta

This was my order. I can never be disappointed with panna cotta. I love its silky texture. This one tasted superb when paired with the cherry sauce on the side.

Merengue

These merengues were complimentary, but they usually come with coffee. Unlike most merengues, they  had a creamy center, which was also – what’s another synonym for delicious? I think that’s all I ever said this whole blog. But it was, and our MD admitted that this was his favourite dessert here.

I was so full from what I ate that the feeling lasted till dinner! 😯

I am so grateful I had a chance to go there!

Bonus Story

The most interesting tidbit I heard over lunch was the story of G’s first day at work in Mumbai. He got on the train which is notorious for being packed with people, so packed that some of them even cling to the sides of the train and actually ride all the way there, like this. 😨

He didn’t do this, though. He managed to get inside, but somehow lost one of his shoes and his wallet in the process.

He went to find a conductor to report his missing wallet. The conductor asked him where his ticket was. He said he had lost it along with his wallet.

The conductor then told him that he was not allowed to be on the train without a ticket, and proceeded to give him a fine.

At this point, G burst out crying.

I have my own tales like these to tell about the Philippines, but maybe I should save that for another blog post. I’ll end this here. Ktnxbye.
