Last Saturday, I met up with Betchie and Arlyn to watch Kaos, one of the films shown by Cathay for their Italian Film Festival. It’s a three-hour long Italian film divided into four short stories.
The Other Son is about a mother who longs for and keeps on writing to her two sons who left for America 14 years ago. The man who volunteers to write her letter for her notices that she has one more son whom she pointedly ignores. He asks her why and she tells the harrowing tale of how this other son was the result of a rape.
Moon Sickness tells the story of a woman who is recently married to a man who has not told her his deepest secret – every full moon, he goes insane. He asks that she barricade herself in their house each full moon and allows her to keep her mother and her friend Saro with her on these nights. Unknown to the husband, Saro is actually his wife’s lover.
The Jar is a comedy about a rich man who buys a giant jar. When it breaks, he hires a man to repair it but the latter gets trapped inside the jar. The owner refuses to let the man break his precious jar open so he can get out, so the man makes a lot of noise until the owner finally smashes the jar himself to be rid of him.
Conversations with Mother shows a man travelling back to his hometown after his mother is dead. He imagines her in the chair where she always used to sit and talks to her about her favorite memory as a child, a story that he always wanted to write but never knew quite how to tell.
It was an interesting film but it’s not mainstream, so it’s not the sort that everyone would appreciate.
When we went outside, we saw several tables selling trinkets and the like, so we bought a few.

Then we decided to continue with the Italian theme and headed to Cafe Indulge for an Italian dinner – thin crust pizza and oil based pasta.
We were so full afterwards and we didn’t want to go home yet, so we walked around town, walking by the Singapore Art Museum, Chijmes, and this back street where we discovered a toy museum and a lovely place that sold french crepes. We made plans for our next outings and created a new term: Saro. I love exploring my artsy side with these girls. Can’t wait for our next meet up. 🙂
