I know, I know, it’s supposed to be Throwback Thursdays, and not Tuesdays, but there is a reason why I have to post this today. It kind of still works anyway, coz it still alliterates, right?
So anyway, back in 2001, just for fun, we came up with a class newsletter we called the Balance $heet in which I wrote a purposely morbid class prophecy called Worst Case Scenario (an accounting term) which was dated – you’ve probably guessed by now – today!
A page off our newsletter. Can you believe I’ve kept this for over a decade? |
In the “prophecy,” (why do I feel so Harry Potterish all of a sudden?) I supposedly toppled off the stage during college graduation and fell into a ten-year coma, and upon waking up, I get a rundown of the mostly terrible things that had happened to all my college blockmates while I was asleep. You can read the entire thing over here. Yes I had a very wild imagination even back then. Even more so back then, actually.
I can’t believe D day has come, but thank goodness none of those horrible things happened to any of us! I just want to point out, however, that our actual graduation day was on March 22, not 26. I had written this piece two years before we graduated so I didn’t know which date it would be. But despite the four day difference it still doesn’t change the fact that it was 10 freaking years ago. Ugh, am I really that old? Huhuhu.
A decade ago |
So since none of those things happened, maybe I can take a shot at writing another prophecy for 2023? Haha no way!
I’ll still write, though, but not about the future but rather, the present, and give you a real rundown of what those people are up to now.
Joy is not with Jason but is with another classmate of ours – Rogelio! This actually came as a surprise to us because they weren’t close back then. I have yet to hear the story of how they came to be a couple, but I’m just glad that Rogelio did not have one too many heartbreaks and become a serial killer after all. They are both still in Zamboanga City.
Mayette is now known as Maya and while she still loves to sing and do business in her spare time, her main career is working in the same company as me here in Singapore.
Zenie is not yet married and she is far away from her hometown, now a permanent resident of Jersey Island, UK, where she audits during weekdays and bakes on weekends.
Gay is still as simple and childlike as she once was, but thankfully this had no negative effect that caused her to be an arsonist, which would have been hard to pull off in Singapore, where she is currently working. She has never been imprisoned either, unless you count that one time that Ronald accidentally locked her in our laundry area back when we were still living in Makati. That story deserves a separate blog.
Carl actually became an attorney, but I don’t think he defends trees. He also did put up his own firm, but not to practice law, but accounting. He remained in Zamboanga, where he stays with his wife and daughter.
As far as I know, Ronald is still 100% human and is in no danger of being dissected under suspicion of being an alien. He is currently working for an auditing firm in Manila.
Lester did not become a scientist but decided to work for the government instead. And he didn’t end up with either Alenah or Rona, who are now both married. He just recently found a girlfriend, though, so maybe it’s his turn to get married soon? Who knows. Rona and Lester both flourished in our hometown while Alenah married soon after college and is with her husband in Marawi, I think. I haven’t seen her in 10 years!
Cate, Tyne, Austine, and Junjun did not become models and have not gotten into a weird mixed up double wedding. Junjun is actually married, though, and is based in Jakarta with his Indonesian wife and a daughter. Cate and Tyne are both single and ready to mingle in Singapore, and once in a while people still confuse them for each other because of their similar voices. And by “people” I actually mean me. Meanwhile, Austine is a nurse in Saudi.
Helen Mae got married, the first in our block to do so, but she married a guy from Zamboanga and stayed there. Cocoy is also married to a different woman and is also staying in Zamboanga. Helen has a son, also the first in our block to have had a child. I don’t know if Cocoy has any kids yet and I have lost all contact of him because he doesn’t have a Facebook account. Believe it or not.
Carlo, Pams and Jenny did not establish businesses. Carlo is now a branch manager of a bank in Zamboanga and is getting married soon. Pams got married, had a daughter, and moved to Canada. Jenny got married, had a son and stayed in Zamboanga.
No third world war has been started. Rodel did not die a sacrificial death and is still very much alive, having just migrated to Canada with his wife.
Tupe never wrote for a newspaper, though he did write a blog, Checken Counter, for some time. Maybe someday he’ll resurrect it in bisaya form. Maybe. He is currently based in Zamboanga.
Arlene has not joined any reality TV shows as far as I know. She is based in Makati.
Lynette never joined showbiz and stayed in Zamboanga to pursue an accounting career.
Jeng is still in Zamboanga, yes, but she isn’t mayor of our city. She doesn’t even have any political ambitions. Maybe she is the mayor her household, though. Haha.
Chu didn’t put up an internet porn website, but he did put up a blog, Late Night with Jesse. Late night, huh? Looks like I did get something right and some things really don’t change! LOL. Some things do, however, because he is now residing in Sydney, Australia.
I know, real life is not as interesting as fiction, huh? Tsktsk. Well, at least “steady” is a lot better than interesting but horrible, right? And happy stories are a lot more fun to watch than horror ones anyway!
But you know what, let’s check back in another decade. I’m still convinced that my theory about Ronald is true. (But I really do hope they don’t dissect him if so!)
