This is it, guys. I’ve found THE ONE.
It wasn’t something that I had to think about. From the first moment, I knew. It was love at first bite.
Lotus speculoos au choco, will you marry me????
I have never had a favorite bread spread before. Well, sure, I’d buy peanut butter and eat it out of the jar once in a while, but it was not something that I really craved and needed and would want to be with for the rest of my life, you know?
In fact I love Lotus so damn much that I didn’t eat a lot of it at once, afraid that the jar would be empty so soon and I won’t have any left to eat anymore. I want to savor it slowly, so it would last for many more days. And I have kept the jar in a secret little cabinet in my room where nobody else can get at it because I want it all to myself. (Shhh… don’t tell my friends that I’m a selfish greedy brat!)
You’re probably thinking, err, why don’t you just buy more, duh?
Well, see, the problem is the store which sells it, German Marketplace, is like 80 minutes away from where I live if I take the train. 20 minutes if I take the cab, but that would set me back S$15.
I could hoard a lot of the stuff in one trip so I don’t have to keep going back but then there’s another problem – this product is so popular in Singapore lately that the store has had to impose this rule:
Yes, seriously, just 2 bottles!
I talked to the cashier about it. She had actually laughed at me because I had bought 4 bottles of Ovomaltine (which my friends wanted to try and which I will blog about separately) and 2 speculoos ones (the other bottle was the non-chocolate one, big mistake, if I had only known I would’ve bought two of the chocolate). It was an incredibly heavy load to lug from the store to the nearest MRT station (Botanic Gardens) for a 10-15 minute walk. 😮
“Speculoos is really popular, huh?” I commented, to which she replied: “Yes, actually those two (Ovomaltine also) are very popular! People used to come and buy 30 bottles of the stuff in one go.” OMG 30 bottles. Thirty. Can you believe it? Well actually, now that I’ve tried it, I can!
Speculoos, by the way, is a kind of cookie which tastes like gingerbread. So imagine crushed Speculoos cookies and chocolate, all mashed up to make one creamy spread – this is what it’s like. The gingerbread taste is the perfect foil to the chocolate that keeps it from being one dimensionally sweet.
So what are you waiting for? Go grab yourself a jar! The address is below. You might want to ring them up before going to make sure that they still have some stock left, or your journey might be for naught. Once you’ve tried it, come back and let me know what you think!
