Spizza + Los Primos @ Club Street {Foodee}

Well hello Saturday, my most favorite day of the week! I do love my Saturdays when I can either just be a lazy bum and stay at home doing virtually nothing the whole day (which really doesn’t happen often; I have too many friends for that) or go hang out with one of my many sets of friends. I have a bit of both today, so while I’m still at home doing laundry before I head off to meet my friends later, let me tell you about how I spent my Saturday two weeks back.

After a long grueling 5-hour trek in MacRitchie Reservoir Park, I don’t really know how I managed to find the energy to meet up with my friends Betchie and Arlyn for dinner and drinks that night. Betchie was the one who suggested the place, Spizza, which was her favorite pizza place. It was located near Chinatown, and as we had both never been there, Arlyn and I agreed to meet at the MRT and walked to the place with the aid of my maps app. I love technology, don’t you?

Betchie was already holding a table facing the street when we arrived. As I pored over the menu and saw the familiar names, I realized that this was where I had planned to order food for my 30th birthday dinner last year but I changed my mind when they mentioned a two-hour delivery. Well at least I got to try it, finally!

We ordered a couple of medium sized pizzas and a lasagna. I loved the Olivia, but the other two orders were just meh. Especially that lasagna. I don’t know what was in it but it tasted fishy and not that delicious. We didn’t even finish it and didn’t bother to have it wrapped up in a doggy bag.

I thought it was interesting that Arlyn’s iced peach tea had real peaches at the bottom of the glass. She loved it so much that she ordered another one while Betchie and I had hot drinks after finishing off our cokes. I was looking for hot mocha on the menu and mistakenly thought that it was the “chocolate cappuccino.” Turns out that was just pure chocolate. It was good, but it wasn’t what I wanted that night.

We were hankering for dessert, so we ordered one for sharing. The waitress asked if they could use raspberry sauce instead of whipped cream as they had run out (it was already very late), and we agreed. It worked well! The mousse was delightful, but Betchie was slightly disappointed with the chocolate shell. I have to give props for its appearance, though. So pretty!

But that wasn’t the highlight of my night. We were in the mood to drink and “chill,” so we looked for a place to do just that and walked along the streets until we found a place where the bars had tables right in the middle of the street. It had such a chill, laid-back vibe, exactly what we were looking for! Yaybells! We immediately sat down on one of the tables of a restaurant/bar called Los Primos.

We weren’t the only ones who appreciated this wonderful, unusual view. Every once so often, someone would pass by and take a photo of the view with his camera.
Los Primos had a nice food menu (they served tapas and such) and we remarked on how we should have eaten here. Maybe next time. We ordered cocktails from a very extensive menu. It was hard for me to choose! I realized then that I don’t have a go-to favorite cocktail and I should have one by now!

Cheers!

I can’t actually remember what I had – I think it was a manhattan? – because I was more enamored by Arlyn’s order – isn’t that the prettiest frozen margarita you have ever seen? Who knew you could do that to a strawberry? And just like that I made up my mind about what my go-to cocktail would be from now on.

We really enjoyed hanging out at that place, sipping our delicious cocktails out in the open air in the middle of the street, talking about all sorts of things and people-watching. It was just the perfect spot to people-watch, there were all sorts dropping by – a gang of teenage Australians, a bunch of dressed up Middle Easterners, locals in their best garb, a couple of Caucasian models (I think so, anyway, with their height and build and looks). It reminded me that Singapore is a melting pot of races.

One disadvantage, though, as with any al fresco spot in a tropical country, is that it gets a bit too warm after a while, and the alcohol most certainly doesn’t help. I had to take off my scarf, which Arlyn had expressly admired earlier. But it’s a minor con to put up with when I consider its best pro – that it wasn’t noisy in – or should I say – out there! I hate to admit it, but you know you’re getting old when you can’t stand the noise in bars anymore. 😛  Can’t wait to go back there soon!
